A native of Toronto, Richard began studying classical piano at the age of eight. His interest in the ‘classics’ culminated in a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto. Whiteman’s jazz career took off in the mid-eighties when he began working with many well-known musicians. He’s acclaimed for his knowledge of the jazz piano tradition and his ability to produce a beautiful tone from the instrument. Katie Malloch of CBC Radio has described his playing as “tidy, cogent, always swinging.” American critic Scott Yanow, writing in Coda Magazine, called Richard a “fine mainstream pianist, whose style recalls Oscar Peterson with some touches of Bill Evans.” He’s released four recordings including his latest, Solo Piano (Cornerstone). With Sly Juhas drums, Brandi Disterheft bass. “Richard Whiteman’s style ranges from vigorous late swing to coolly meditative ballads, bridging styles as disparate as those of Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock.”—Toronto Life
