Is the traditional holiday party becoming obsolete?

The traditional image of a holiday party is changing. During the pre-recession, companies were hosting elaborate parties which generally included entertainment, sit down meals, gifting, open bars and it was expected for spouses to be in attendance.

Post-recession, we are a long way from these traditional parties. However, corporations are eagerly looking for ways to recognize employee efforts and create a strong team bond which is cost effective and more meaningful.

The good news is there are lots of ways to show your employees that their work is appreciated as you create a team bond and provide a unique and enjoyable experience. Why not have your company participate an activity which supports a charity? Right now there are lots of opportunities to volunteer with charitable organizations or create a charitable initiative of your own within the company. This can lead up to a holiday celebration which recognizes not only the efforts of the employees of the year but also the opportunity for the company to give back.

Why not do something experiential? Holiday parties do not need to be formal sit-down events. They can include unique experiences such as hands-on cooking classes with celebrity chefs, magic trick workshops, Improv classes, mural painting or creation of a signature art piece for the office. Or consider surprise office perks for a month (such as a Margarita Monday, Taco Tuesday..) or a contest for spontaneous acts of kindness in the office. The experiences you offer should speak to your company culture and the values you want to instill in your employees.

Sit-down dinners do not have to be stuffy or boring! Make them fun and interactive! I like to develop events where the audience becomes a part of the entertainment for the evening and challenge the guests to be creative and step outside of their day to day comfort zones all while having fun and enjoying an elegant meal. Some of these events include Rock the Red Carpet, where the guests are the attendees at a music awards evening or Panam Dinner where a variety of cultural traditions, toasts and cuisine are celebrated throughout the evening.

Some companies are choosing to host their holiday recognition in the form of a kick-off to the New Year in January or February. This is a great solution as it is more cost effective and competes less with family and social obligations.

It is time to think outside of the box. Employees are looking for interaction which is meaningful and memorable. These opportunities will help to not only build, but to strengthen your company culture.
